Background of the Study

Religious institutions play a pivotal role in shaping societal values and cultural norms, yet they are not immune to gender biases. In Ibadan South East Local Government Area, these biases manifest in leadership roles, participation, and the interpretation of religious doctrines (Adewale, 2023). Recent studies conducted between 2023 and 2025 have highlighted that gender biases within religious communities can perpetuate unequal treatment, limit women's roles, and reinforce patriarchal structures (Ogun, 2024). Such biases affect not only organizational dynamics but also the broader community’s views on gender roles and responsibilities (Akinjide, 2025). This study seeks to investigate the extent and impact of gender biases in religious institutions, analyzing how these practices influence both institutional policies and individual perceptions. By examining religious texts, leadership structures, and community interactions, the research aims to uncover the ways in which gender bias is perpetuated and to suggest strategies for promoting more equitable practices within religious settings. A comprehensive understanding of these biases is essential for fostering inclusive religious practices and advancing gender equality in faith communities.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the influential role of religious institutions, gender biases continue to prevail in Ibadan South East, limiting women's participation and reinforcing patriarchal norms (Adewale, 2023). These biases manifest in leadership roles, doctrinal interpretations, and community practices, hindering efforts toward gender equality (Ogun, 2024). The persistence of such biases has significant social and cultural implications, contributing to ongoing gender disparities (Akinjide, 2025). This study aims to explore the extent and effects of gender biases in religious institutions to inform strategies for promoting more inclusive practices and equitable gender relations.

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the prevalence of gender biases in religious institutions in Ibadan South East.

To examine the impact of these biases on women's roles and participation.

To recommend strategies for promoting gender equality within religious settings.

Research Questions:

What gender biases are present in religious institutions in Ibadan South East?

How do these biases affect women's roles and participation?

What measures can promote more inclusive and equitable practices in religious institutions?

Research Hypotheses:

Gender biases significantly limit women's participation in religious institutions.

Patriarchal norms within religious settings contribute to unequal treatment.

Interventions promoting gender inclusivity can enhance women's roles in religious communities.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it investigates the pervasive gender biases in religious institutions and their impact on community dynamics. The findings will provide insights for religious leaders and policymakers to implement more inclusive practices, fostering gender equality. By addressing these biases, the study contributes to a more equitable social environment and enhances the role of women within faith communities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

Gender Biases: Prejudicial attitudes or discrimination based on gender.

Religious Institutions: Organized structures and communities centered around religious practices.

Patriarchal Norms: Social systems that favor male authority and leadership.
